This is a series of gameplay vids I’m doing highlighting overlooked games for the PS2. Primal is a dark and puzzle heavy adventure game. The game’s larger focus on exploration and puzzles will bore the God of War crowd. There is some action to be had, but it’s not the most in depth combat system. I personally love this game. It’s a great game for those willing to get into it. If you like the older adventure games that are more exploration based, then you should definitely look into this game. You won’t be disappointed. My only complaint is that, as with many games of this type, it’s not always clear where to go next, so you can get lost for hours. However, I prefer that style more, because I hate when the game ruins the puzzles for you by making them too obvious. I like to do a little thinking with my exploring, and if you do too, then check this game out. Primal is only on the PS2.
Time Commanders is a series of programmes made by Lion TV for BBC Two that ran for two seasons from 2003 to 2005. It uses an edited version of the game engine behind the real-time strategy game Rome: Total War by the Creative Assembly to recreate famous battles of the ancient world. The battles are replayed by 4-player teams from diverse backgrounds. The teams are unfamiliar with computer games, to make sure their gaming skills do not influence their success. After a brief introduction of the battle, including an overview of military units, terrain and available forces, the players have to develop a strategy and then deploy their forces. Two of the players are selected as generals, who will direct the battle and have access to a strategic map. The other two players are designated lieutenants, the units are indirectly controlled by the lieutenants, who issue commands to program assistants, who in turn use the game interface to control the units.

Alright, let’s get down to some actual racing! Character: AiAi Monkey Ball seems like a fun game from the videos I’ve seen of them. So I chose AiAi. I was gonna choose Amy, but maybe I’ll choose her for another time. Oh, and for the record, the tracks are exactly the same in all the versions, which is good, since that means all Sega did to the DS version was change the graphics and music. Let’s get started on descriptions for the tracks, shall we? Track 1: Whale Lagoon This track, if you notice, has a MIDI replaced song from Sonic Heroes. If I’m not mistaken, the song is a MIDI replacement of Seaside Hill. Pretty cool if you ask me. There’s lots of turns on this track, giving you plenty of times where you can drift and boost your speed. But there’s also several places where you can fall off, so be careful. Track 2: Icicle Valley This track comes from “Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg”. I’ve never actually played this game, but from what I’ve heard, it’s a pretty fun game involving a guy in a chicken costume rolling around a giant egg. Anyways, this track is alright. Some long turns and losts of boosts. Enjoy the speed! Track 3: Roulette Road This track is based off of Casino Park from Sonic Heroes. Personally, I would’ve preferred Bingo Highway since I like the music on that level more, but this is fine. Pretty fun track. There is also one bit where you are constantly going around in a circle on the track, and the only way to escape it is if you go through a little road …

Just got the monitor recapped and thought I would take it for a spin. Bought this a few years ago as a project from Greg (arcadeshopper). He has one just like it… Originally from Wunderland Arcade in either Portland or Clackamas. It is quite possible that I played this very machine on location. When I got it, the monitor was scrambled as someone had tried installing a standard res chassis when it is a medium res game. Needed a new 30A power supply, new ZRAMS to store initial calibration settings. Still has an intermittent problem where the “brakes” lock up during gameplay. Brake pot is fine and installed a NOS brake input board but still happens. I suspect a grounding problem. The monitor is crisp and clear now but shows up blurry in the video, oh well. This machine was amazing and pushed the envelope back in 1990. Graphics look primitive now, but really the frame rate is quite respectable and the driving physics are good. The crash physics however are laughable… the car often shoots straight up into the air. Overall though, there isn’t really much to do in the game, so has limited replay value for an owner. But guests always love to play it.
