Time Commanders is a series of programmes made by Lion TV for BBC Two that ran for two seasons from 2003 to 2005. It uses an edited version of the game engine behind the real-time strategy game Rome: Total War by the Creative Assembly to recreate famous battles of the ancient world. The battles are replayed by 4-player teams from diverse backgrounds. The teams are unfamiliar with computer games, to make sure their gaming skills do not influence their success. After a brief introduction of the battle, including an overview of military units, terrain and available forces, the players have to develop a strategy and then deploy their forces. Two of the players are selected as generals, who will direct the battle and have access to a strategic map. The other two players are designated lieutenants, the units are indirectly controlled by the lieutenants, who issue commands to program assistants, who in turn use the game interface to control the units.
This is my review of CityGT, an iPhone/iPod touch app which just launched today (6-9-09) at FedSquare in Melbourne. Theres not much to this app, with few settings, if not none and a simple clean menu interface. This game can be played on the big screen at three locations around the city, or on your iPhone/iPod as demonstrated in the video. The app is really centred around safe driving. A supposedly “Blocked” number calls you several times while driving (shown in video) and gives you an option to accept or decline. Since I was playing on an iPhone, I first thought these calls were real (prior to making this video) Once accepted, it goes over using mobile phones while driving,a nod after the brief call, your car automatically crashes. The app does teach you a very important lesson, and is worth the download price of $0.

With an Xbox version also on store shelves, the PlayStation 2 version of this high-profile game faces some stiff competition for the best console version of the game.
